Tanana Valley Campus
Fairbanks
The Tanana Campus is situated in downtown Fairbanks, AK. I met with Steve Cysewski, a self-taught computer person working with Computer Information & Office Systems, Keithe Swarner, TVC computer support technician, and Deanne Hallaston, a counselor for the Student Assistance Department. I asked them three questions:
  1. Name & address for contact information.
  2. What takes up the longest amount of time during your daily duties?
  3. Tell me what your community looks like in 10 years.

None of them gave me their e-mail address as part of their contact information. Communication seemed to be the common issue taking up most of their time. They have a Technology Planning Committee that meets during the school year. This committee is defining their vision & mission. They have no inventories of equipment and no plans of lab layouts. They suspect that statewide has it (Statewide doesn’t). They have a Technology Planning Committee that meets during the academic school year. They have real good computer recycling program and ways of keeping computers in the lab consistent. Their recycling program consists of:

When a teacher or faculty orders a new computer for their desktop, the new computer goes into one of their many student labs. Then the lab computer is loaded with the new software and given to the teacher/faculty/administrator. This keeps the lab new and the teachers with the same computers that the students are using, thus all of the people are using the same types of computers and the all can help each other.

They are currently using the BANNER Student Information System (SIS) to facilitate students applying and taking classes on-line. The BANNER SIS is an on-line system used to track students' progress across the University of Alaska System.
