At the Western Cooperative's Annual Meeting 1997, the issue of learner-centered or learner-based instruction was raised several times. It certainly was a discussion item among the Western Cooperative's Steering Committee about how this organization can address this issue.
Over the past few months, the DEOS-L listserv has hosted a lengthy (and sometimes fruitful) discussion on this issue. As a result, a separate listserv has been developed. I thought you might like the announcement listed below....

Ladies and Gentlemen:
The list for the study of learner-based methods in education has, after certain technical difficulties, come to fruition. All are welcome to join. Please be aware that the fundamental assumption of the list is that there *are* differences in focus among methods of instruction which result in a continuum along a spectrum, or might be arranged in a multidimensional matrix, as the case may be, but which differ primarily in the distinction between "discovery" and "delivery".
The very fact that I must here begin to make reference to an intuitive sense of these differences, rather than to any objective standards, is one of the reasons for the existence of this list, namely to derive some definitions and descriptions by which methods of instruction can be categorized in this regard....the development of common understandings which can be reasonably objectively applied.
The second purpose of the list is to examine every such method we can find and to provide resources whereby such methods can be explored. Such methods should be sufficiently developed that they can be identified, differentiated, and, if the list member so wishes, sufficiently well understood that s/he can incorporate such methods into her/his classes.
