West Chester University - Virtual Biology Laboratory
Professors John T. Beneski and Jack Waber, in the Department of Biology at West Chester University in Pennsylvania have developed a CD-ROM-based series of laboratory modules called the Virtual Biology Lab. Designed as an alternative to the traditional laboratory format for a college-level, basic Biology class, the application is an interactive series of modules covering a wide range of topics. Topics range from cell chemistry to ecology. It currently is being beta-tested in a class of approximately 500 students at the university where, in addition to using Bodyworks 4.0 for human dissection, it has completely replaced traditional laboratory activities. Virtual Biology Laboratory is designed to improve and expand the educational effectiveness and efficiency of biology laboratories. Students are exposed to the same tools used by biologists to acquire information about living organisms, such as microscopes, radioisotope counting, electrophoresis, and chromatography. Students actually "do" science by performing experiments, generating "raw" data that must be analyzed and interpreted, and then using the data to explain and help understand some biological concept or phenomenon.
California State University, Los Angeles - Web Spreads Science Instruction Far and Wide
Fruit flies mating in cyberspace and earthquakes on the Web are all in a day's work for two professors from California State University, Los Angeles. Robert Desharnais, associate professor of biology and Gary Novak, professor of geology at Cal Sate L.A. have recently ported two of their popular teaching programs, Virtual FlyLab and Virtual Earthquake to the World Wide Web where they're attracting attention from around the world.
The project is called The Electronic Desktop and it's slated to grow. Novak and Desharnais got the idea to develop their "electronic desktop" on the Web when they realized that the science instruction software they had created on NextStep would be difficult to widely disseminate because of the operating system's limited commercial success. The two had developed an entire suite of programs using NextStep over the last five years.

AACC/Network Workforce Database on Web
