The only way to reach the Havasupai Village is to ride mules, hike or fly in by helicopter. We have installed 6 wireless (bi-directional satllite systems over mini-dishes[36"X24"]) Internet systems so these folks can finally receive instruction from Northern Arizona University or Coconino Community College. The computer I am now using has an uplink speed of over 160kbps with a downlink speed from 200-400kpbs. The entire United States and much of the world is now open to this technology and it is unbelievable how fast it functions. NAU Webstreamed courses are been shown down here at 200kpbs and it is like you are right there in the classroom. It is really exciting to bring the most remote Native American tribe into the new century since they have been unserved for many centuries. |

Subject: Historic Moment
for the Havasupai Village & Navajo Nation Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 11:16:48 -0500 From: Evans Craig <evans@evanscraig.com> It goes way beyond just another group. It appears that the whole Navajo Nation is coming up also. Great work Laurence.
Laurence Gishey wrote: Evans, NAU, Navajo Nation, Starband have connected over 70 of the 110 chapter houses on the Navajo Nation and will complete connecting the rest this week. Last week the Hopi Police Dept. also received a system that will connect them with the FBI data center and other public safety agencies across the country. This system also allows individuals who buy the system starting October to take courses on the NAU university-house network from home. Laurence |
