How to Fill in the Gaps in Your Facebook Timeline

If you’ve converted your Facebook profile to the new Timeline, you’ve seen how different it is than your previous page. Timeline isn’t only designed to look different; it has an entirely new function. Timeline has a greater purpose than the old Facebook profile. It is supposed to represent you and chronicle your entire life. It’s meant to present you to the world by showcasing the most important events in your life. These events are augmented and explained by your Facebook activity, from your wall posts to your photographs to your comments. It’s a social media history of you.

But Facebook doesn’t just want to design your page for you. Timeline encourages you to actively participate in creating your profile. You get to decide what events and information stands out to the people who view your page. You can hide the things you want them to forget, and you can enhance and add the things you want them to notice. Your Timeline doesn’t just represent the years since you’ve joined Facebook; it encompasses your entire life. Based on this, you have some work to do in order to show the whole picture. You’ll need to fill in the gaps in your Facebook Timeline, and here’s how.

Start with Your Birth

The earliest event that Facebook has on your profile is your birth, based on the birthday you provided when you signed up. So the first thing you should do is scroll all the way down to the bottom of your Timeline and edit your birth. There will be a big box inviting you to add a picture. Go ahead and get out the cutest photo to represent you as a newborn and scan it. This addition to your profile will be incredibly endearing, and your friends will love that you took the time to add it. Then, hit Edit in the upper right-hand corner of the box. You can add the hospital you were born in, where you grew up, and tell the story of your birth.

Add Life Events

When you view your Timeline, right next to the option to post your status or upload a picture, there will be an option called Life Event. Click on Life Event, and you can add anything you want to your Timeline. There are categories for Work & Education, Family & Relationships, Home & Living, Health & Wellness, and Travel & Experiences. Under these categories, you can select from a broad range of life events, such as buying a house, getting a new vehicle, quitting a habit, ending a relationship, a new job, or “other life event,” which allows you to add anything you choose. Go through these categories one-by-one and filling in the significant events in your life. Remember that these will be visible to all your friends and possibly anyone online, so don’t add events you don’t want to talk about. Think of major, exciting, or life-changing events, such as moving, going on vacation, or starting a new job. Add the details and stories, then go through your photo albums and scan and upload relevant photos. Before you know it, you’ll have a complete and compelling Timeline.

Who is your target market?

This post is defining a piece of your overall Marketing Plan,

A marketing plan may be part of an overall business plan. Solid marketing strategy is the foundation of a well-written marketing plan. While a marketing plan contains a list of actions, a marketing plan without a sound strategic foundation is of little use.

which starts with a Marketing Strategy,

Marketing strategy is a process that can allow an organization to concentrate its limited resources on the greatest opportunities to increase sales and achieve a sustainable competitive advantage.

Marketing strategies serve as the fundamental underpinning of marketing plans designed to fill market needs and reach marketing objectives. Plans and objectives are generally tested for measurable results. Commonly, marketing strategies are developed as multi-year plans, with a tactical plan detailing specific actions to be accomplished in the current year. Time horizons covered by the marketing plan vary by company, by industry, and by nation, however, time horizons are becoming shorter as the speed of change in the environment increases. Marketing strategies are dynamic and interactive. They are partially planned and partially unplanned.

Target Market

Target Segments in YOUR Target Market are ...

First off, let’s define ‘Target Market’:

A target market is a group of customers that the business has decided to aim its marketing efforts and ultimately its merchandise. A well-defined target market is the first element to a marketing strategy. The target market and the marketing mix variables of product, place(distribution), promotion and price are the four elements of a marketing mix strategy that determine the success of a product in the marketplace.

4 questions to ask yourself about your target market:

  1. Who is your market?
     How do you define them? Who is your best possible customer?
  2. What does your market want?
     As in, what product are they looking for? What problem are they seeking to solve?
    How are you poised as thier Solution Provider?
  3. What is the size of your market?
     Can I compete?
  4. How do they want the product delivered?
     Often the delivery & customer experience is the MOST Important part of what the product is.

What is a Business Plan & Why do I need one?

Business PlanA business plan is a formal statement of a set of business goals, the reasons why they are believed attainable, and the plan for reaching those goals. It may also contain background information about the organization or team attempting to reach those goals.

Why do I need a Business Plan?

One of the first questions entrepreneurs, online businesses, and especially MLM’s (multi-level-marketers) & Network Marketers ask is :

Am I a business?

Because they are telling themselves this: 

  • I am just trying to make some extra money…
  • I am just supplementing my income…
  • I am just trying to see if this can replace my regular job…

The mindset of the person & persons  running the operation, the online activities, the mlm or the network marketer, has to be; We are a business. And needs to treat these activities as a business. Whether it is a part-time or full-time activity, it is YOUR business, so give it the ‘respect’ & You will ‘get respect’ back. So back to business plans.

Business plans may also target changes in perception and branding by the customer, client, taxpayer, or larger community. When the existing business is to assume a major change or when planning a new venture, a 3 to 5 year business plan is required, since investors will look for their annual return in that time-frame.

The Business plan itself consists of;

  • Basic forms of ownership
  • Type of business
  • Management of business
  • Government regulations or laws
  • Capital
  • Intellectual property

Since I went to business school, I created small plans for small business to great big plans for corporations. Afterwards, I worked with Tribal Nations, that thought that they didn’t need a business plan. They were right, in that the Tribal orginization is NOT a business, so they needed a Strategic Plan.

Strategic planning is an organization’s process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy. In order to determine the direction of the organization, it is necessary to understand its current position and the possible avenues through which it can pursue a particular course of action.

Generally, strategic planning deals with at least one of three key questions:

  1. “What do we do?”
  2. “For whom do we do it?”
  3. “How do we excel?”

In many organizations, this is viewed as a process for determining where an organization is going over the next year or—more typically for Tribal Nations —5 to 10 years (long term), although some extend their vision to 20 years.

So our business plan for an ‘Online Business’ can be short & sweet. It will guide you through the other planning processes needed to accomplish the “Success of YOUR business”.

There’s nothing magical about business planning.  For a small online business, it involves thinking through who your target customers are, how your proposed online venture will profitably address their needs better than the competition, how you will communicate with these customers, and where you plan to get the resources & funds to start it all up.

Writing down these things will help you get straight in your own head what you need to accomplish your wants. Putting them into a formal document helps you to Share your idea to get startup funds & resources to accomplish your business goals.

Top Ten Lies of Entrepreneurs

1. “Our projections are conservative.”
2. “Jupiter says our market will be $50 billion in ten years.”
3. “Several Fortune 500 companies are set to do business with us.”
4. “No one else can do what we’re doing.”
5. “Hurry up because other investors are about to do our deal.”
6. “Our product will go viral.”
7. “The large companies in our market are too big, dumb, and slow to compete with us.”
8. “Our management team is proven.”
9. “We filed patents so our intellectual property is protected.”
10. “All we have to do is get 1% of the market.”

The average number of these ten lies that I hear in most pitches is ten. At the very least, tell investors new lies.

Top Ten Lies of Investors

1. “I liked your company, but my partners didn’t.”
2. “We are patient investors who want to help you build a great company.”
3. “If you get a lead, we’ll invest too.”
4. “There are no companies in our portfolio that conflict with what you’re doing.”
5. “Show us some traction, and we’ll invest.”
6. “We love to co-invest with other firms.”
7. “We’re investing in your team.”
8. “We have lots of bandwith to dedicate to your company.”
9. “This is a plain, vanilla termsheet.”
10. “We will get other companies in our portfolio to work with you.”

Do you know what the difference is between the lies of entrepreneurs and the lies of investors? The investors have money.

It’s not all bad news. Think of everything that an entrepreneur needs (tech ones, anyway), and you’ll see that most things are free or cheap.

• Marketing: use blogs and social media to promote your products.
• Tools: most tools are Open Source and free. Microsoft offers free versions of applications like Word, Excel and PowerPoint in the cloud!
• Infrastructure: More cloud goodness—you don’t have to buy servers anymore.
• People: callous for me to say, but in a recession, people are free or cheap.
• Office space: what office space? You can work out of your garage (like David Hewlett and Bill Packard) or just form a virtual team.

The bottom line is this is one of the cheapest times to be an entrepreneur, so go into your garage and start prototyping. Then when you need to create enchanting documents to raise money using PowerPoint, Word, and Excel, we’re all set to help with Office Web Apps, SkyDrive, and my templates:

Is it Worth it to Market MY Business?

It is always worth marketing any business. Especially if you have a Network Marketing (MLM – Multi-Level Marketing) System, there are different options available, depending on what you plan on doing with your new business.

  • Is it to raise a few dollars more a month or to replace your income?
  • Will you be working part-time or full-time?
  • Do you want to have mutiple streams of leads, ie. warm leads (friends & relatives, co-workers, etc…) , cold leads (people you meet everyday), customers (to buy products) or business leads (to go into your opportunity)?

There are strategy’s for each of these or ALL of these. It really depends on if you are committed to “Starting your own business” or just “Supplementing your current income”.

How do you “Tell Your Business Story” in 60 Seconds or Less?

You can use this “Elevator Pitch” method to get the idea in your own head & be able to tell others about your business quickly.

In situations where many people are vying for attention, the entrepreneurs & business owners who stand out are the ones who deliver their pitch in less than a minute, but still make their points quite persuasively.A concise 30-60 sec pitch of what you are about....

As a strategy coach, I’ve used a four-step exercise that will work for any company or product. You must simply answer each of the following four questions in no more than two sentences:

    1. What do you do?
    2. What problem do you solve?
    3. How is your product or service different?
    4. Why should I care?

By keeping each answer brief, you develop a succinct story that should take no more than 60 seconds, like when you are on an elevator ride to your floor (sometimes called the ‘Elevator Pitch’) .

Let’s use the example of an entrepreneur who is starting a housekeeping franchise. Based on those four questions, the company’s story might sound something like this:

“We own Five Star Cleaning, an eco-friendly housekeeping service that pampers you and your home [what your business does]. Typical cleaning services make you prep your home ahead of time, supervise to prevent theft and hang around for hours while the cleaners do their work. Because we require no prep, this saves time right off the top, and we are bonded so our service is worry-free, allowing you to go about your day [what problem does it solve]. And, we always send a minimum team of three to get the job done quickly [how it's different]. Imagine coming home from a long day and your laundry is all done, your bed has been turned down and there are fresh flowers awaiting you. That’s the extra pampering we offer that sets us apart from all the rest [why you should care].

Your first sentence should be a “Twitter-friendly headline.” You should be able to describe your product or service in 140 characters or less, short enough for a tweet. If you can’t describe your service or product in a sentence, go back to the drawing board. This Twitter exercise will help you out.

If you can tell “your story” in well under 60 seconds and have some extra time, be ready to relate an example or story that makes your product or service more tangible. You’ll notice that in the cleaning service pitch, we offered examples of pampering, such as turning down bed sheets.

Don’t let your idea die because you’ve lost the attention of your audience. Grab your listeners in the first 60 seconds and they’ll want to hear more.

What is Social Media?

Social Media: Are works of user-created video, audio, text or multimedia that are
published and shared in a social environment, such as a blog, podcast, forum, wiki or
video hosting site. More broadly, social media refers to any online technology that lets
people publish, converse and share content online.

Social Media MarketingSocial Networking is a way to network with new people online. People post or tweet or subscribe to the various networks, and they SEE you there! If they see you there as a person that wants to help them solve a problem, they start following you. If you start a buzz about something, such as your NEW FanPage  on Facebook or your New Twitter account, then do not do anything with it, then you LOSE “Likes” (Fans on Facebook) &/or “Followers” (Tweeters on Twitter). So, putting up the Blog, the FanPages &/or Twitter & YouTube accounts is only the first step. Why I Moved from an Internet Business Model to an Online Marketing Model

 So I started a new Internet company here in Washington, DC called “DC Internet Marketing Technology.”

www.DC-Internet-Marketing.com I used the same business Search Engine Optimization (SEO) model that I used in California, years ago. With that model, I had 40+ clients that were subscribed to my services for about $1,500 month to show up on the “FIRST” page of Google, Yahoo & MSN search page results. It was very lucrative, since I could just look at the code & see (in my minds eye) the missing code that would make them rank correctly. I looked at the code, just like the GoogleBots did! So when I decided to stay here in DC, I started the same type of business. I verified that I could still do the magic, by optimizing my site & submitting it to the search sites.
Two weeks later, I typed my company name into Google & saw this:


I saw a whole page of links to my site!
(the top two were ‘Sponsored Results’) I still had It!!!

So, I was on & started working the marketing at Social sites. After 3-4 months, NO CLIENTS!!!

What had I done wrong??

I was using a dated Internet Business Model and I did not have any sort of ‘Marketing Plan’ layed out. So now I need to go through a visioning process & create MYSELF an ‘Online Marketing Plan’, complete with some sort of ‘Marketing Funnel’ to get ‘prospects’ (leads) to market. I need a whole new slew of “Online Marketing Business Tools”.

I also needed to figure out my What, When, Where, & Why was I doing all this!
(and that will be in an upcoming post…)
